Rose interviewing Jace – November 18th

Hello. What’s your name?

My name is Jace Owen Friesen.

How old are you?

I am nine years old.

How did you feel about coming to Mexico before you left home?

Before we came, I had mixed emotions, but when we got here it felt like a much safer and better place than I thought it would be.

Is Mexico what you thought it would be like?

I thought it would be more like orphan people, and poor people, and not as nice.  The village that we live in is very nice.

Is the Tarahumara School and children how you imagined them to be?

No. I thought the school would be different but the Tarahumara, I thought that is how they would look.  I thought the school wouldn’t be built out of cement. I thought it would at least be built out of bricks and it also doesn’t have any running water or classrooms. It’s just one full building.

Is there anything in Mexico that is how you expected it to be?

Yeah, kind of the yards and the houses are what I expected them to be.

What is church like in Mexico?

It’s kind of like the same as ours, but most of them are German and once in a while they will have English in their Sunday Schools.

How is homeschooling going?

Actually pretty good – probably just as good as last year’s school.  It’s kind of just the same, except we don’t go anywhere on a bus – it’s just at home in our shop.

Picture of Jace working on his duolingo - Jace loves learning Spanish!

What is a normal day like for you in Mexico?

First I do my math, then ELA, piano, duolingo and sometimes Science and typing. I also have to practice guitar. On Thursdays I have guitar lessons, and on Saturdays I have soccer in the morning. On Sundays we go to church.  Usually, every day I play hockey around 4 o’clock.  In the evening, we usually eat supper and sometimes, once in a while, we will go to a pizzeria and eat supper there, and after we will come home and do some exercising and relaxing, then get our pajamas on and go to bed.

What are your favorite places to go in Mexico?

The Trampoline Park, La Sierra and Los Arcos (which are both restaurants) and also Ben and Christina’s house and Cornelius and Tina’s house, and their cabin.

Do you have any new favorite foods in Mexico?

I haven’t tried new foods….(that is true!!! New foods are scary. lol)

What about candy?

Torrito Suckers – I really like those.

What do you do the most during your free time in Mexico?

Hockey.  I pretend to be in the NHL and play hockey against other teams – I pretend to be both teams. I had a pre-season and there’s a real season, and then there will be playoffs and the Stanley Cup final.  I’ve played 200 games of hockey – but they’re short games.  I’ve played over 10 hours of hockey in Mexico.  It’s really fun.

What’s the hardest part about being in Mexico?

Probably leaving our cousins and that we don’t know Spanish – I guess I’m learning Spanish. I know it pretty well, but at first it was very difficult.  I know over 700 words in Spanish.

Do you have any new friends in Mexico?

Yes.  They would probably be Marcus, Matthew and Alejandro…and also Carter.

What has God taught you since coming to Mexico?

I have learned that even though we are far away from our cousins, we didn’t come here for that purpose – we came here for the Tarahumara. We didn’t choose to come here, but it was God that brought us here this year.

Anything else you want to tell me about Mexico?

It’s a very interesting place.  I think it’s pretty cool and the people here are very nice. Some people we got to know here that are really nice are Aaron and Lexi (and family), Ben and Christina (and family), Cornelius and Tina (and family) and the families in church.
